A Christian Science Reading Room is simply a community bookstore, containing products and resources for researching, exploring or studying spiritual healing and prayer, regardless of anyone’s religious faith.
Our Reading Room is for everyone to visit. Here you can chat, learn, log on, share and browse. You can buy the Bible, the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy – the Christian Science Journal, and the Christian Science Sentinel and the Christian Science Monitor, a Pulitzer Prize winning daily newspaper paper. You will also find reference materials other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, biographies and Children’s books and audios.
We are in the heart of Sydney – an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city.
Can anyone visit one?
A Christian Science Reading Room is part bookstore and part library. Its purpose is to make available to the public resources that nurture spiritual discovery and healing.
I found it did just that when I was struggling in my early 20s. A lack of direction and isolation from family and friends led me to spend time in a Reading Room quite often. I can say that each time I visited, the loneliness and dark cloud of purposelessness lessened. The spiritual resources brought me comfort and clarity in how to think about my life from a healing perspective.
There are online as well as print materials available now. When you first go in, you will probably see a selection of Bibles and Bible resource books, as well as the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, available for purchase. A librarian will be there to greet you, answer any questions you may have, or just invite you to browse. You will also find the Pulitzer-prize-winning newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor; Christian Science magazines, which include authenticated testimonies of healing through prayer alone; and a variety of biographies on Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science.
One of the unique parts of a Reading Room is the quiet study room where anyone can study, read and pray. These public places are a resource for anyone on a quest for spiritual understanding, as I was, and are open to people of all faiths, backgrounds, and ways of life.
Next time you pass a Christian Science Reading Room, I hope you will feel free to visit. You will find us at the ground floor of 49 York St Sydney, trading hours: Monday – Friday 9:30 – 4:30pm (except public holidays). We also have a reading room in our First Church at 295 Broadway, Glebe 2037 – trading hours Monday to Friday noon to 4 pm.

The How, Why and Wonder of Spiritual Healing
Find out how, and why, spiritual healing is such a powerful force for good in our lives today
This talk was held on Thursday 8th November at 1pm
This lecture explores the phenomena of spiritual healing as recorded throughout the Bible – healing that for centuries had allowed people to live their lives with dominion and not be victims to their circumstances. And it shows by present-day examples, that such healing is not something of the past, but is a present possibility – an accessible transforming power for good in our lives today. It’s shown how a knowledge of our inseparable relationship to God brings practical healing solutions. Also, how practical, effective prayer can help us all experience divine power and protection in our lives. Included are multiple examples of the practicality of spiritual healing, including protection from an attack, healing of a medically diagnosed ‘incurable’ illness and effects of a severe accident.
Demystifying Spiritual Healing
Find security in an insecure world through the power of spiritual healing
This talk was held on Friday 9th November at 7pm
This is a lecture full of heart and practical application. Through analogies and healing examples, in ‘Demystifying Spiritual Healing’ we discover where genuine security in our lives really comes from. The knowledge that there is a divine Principle underlying our lives that, when relied on, consistently brings peace and goodness to our lives, has been known and proved for centuries. We see that, by looking to God, Spirit, instead of materiality, the people in the Bible found reliable peace, healing and solutions to their everyday needs. And the discovery of the Science of Christianity, by Mary Baker Eddy, shows how we too can experience this same peace, security and healing, in our lives. It brings us to the realization that, we can no more run out of the good that we need than we can run out of God’s love for us.
